Mitch Terry - Roswell Alumni

April 20, 2009
"Berry Baseball's McCalley and [Roswell Alum] Terry Sweep Weekly Conference Awards"

ROME, Ga. -- Berry's Matt McCalley and Mitch Terry earned the Southern States Athletic Conference weekly awards for Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. McCalley was 1-0 for the week with a save, while Terry maintained a batting average of .579.

The Vikings had a 3-2 week, winning the first game of a doubleheader with No. 3 Southern Polytechnic, defeating Southern Wesleyan in a single game and splitting a Saturday doubleheader with Southern Wesleyan. The victories give Berry an overall record of 35-12 and a conference-leading 19-5 record in the SSAC.

McCalley worked eight innings during the week without allowing a single run. He shut down the potent offense of Southern Polytechnic in his first appearance of the week, as he did not allow a single hit in a save effort on Tuesday. The win gave Berry the season series over the Hornets and gave McCalley his team-leading seventh save of the season. McCalley is also the career saves leader at Berry with 21 saves to date.

In his second appearance, McCalley threw seven innings of relief to pick up the win against Southern Wesleyan to give Berry a key, come-from-behind victory and keep the Vikings keep the lead in the SSAC title race. McCalley is 7-0 this season and has a miniscule 1.24 ERA.

Terry was 11-for-19 at the plate for a .597 batting average. He also hit the game-winning, three-run home run in the last inning of Berry's 5-3 win over No. 3 Southern Poly on Tuesday. Terry hit a pair of home runs in the series with SPSU and added a double and six singles in the series against Southern Wesleyan to give him a .947 slugging-percentage for the week.

Berry is currently tied with Southern Poly atop the SSAC standings with each team having a 19-5 conference-record. By virtue of taking two of the three games in the series against SPSU, the Vikings hold the tiebreaker over the Hornets and are in first place in the league. That means that Berry can assure itself a first-ever conference regular season title with a sweep in the final SSAC series of the year against Brewton Parker.

Berry has not lost a series all season and has recorded sweeps over Shorter and Faulkner this year. The team will start the final run with a doubleheader on Thursday starting at 2 p.m. followed by a single nine-inning at BPC on Friday starting at 1 p.m.

Both McCalley and Terry will now be put forward to the NAIA committee for consideration as NAIA Player of the Week.
